I am very open minded, I believe in evolution and I am accepting of all types of people, but I'm a republican?

When I registered to vote, I chose republican because I believe in smaller government and all the constitutional rights, but I am also very open minded and accepting, does that make sense for a republican to have all those views on evolution and different groups of people and etc?
